It’s the most wonderful time of the year. December brings a little more than a much needed bout of cool air; Christmas parties, weddings and of course there’s New Year’s eve. This means a lot of food and a lot of drinks. It’s a tough place, because we all want to indulge, but we also want to look and feel good while we indulge. There’s also very few things worse than laying in bed with a throbbing headache and bad stomach regretting the one drink that threw you over the edge and cringing while watching your Snapchat stories thinking about why you hate yourself. And as much as we would like to believe we’re never going to binge again, our bubble bursts at the next party we go to. So voila! Here’s the December survival guide, to make the aftermath as forgiving as possible.
- Hot water + Lime
It may be hard at first, but set a reminder on your phone, or leave a little post-it on your bedside because a glass of warm water in the morning can go a long way. If anything, it will help any disturbance in your digestive system and will have you moving in no time.
- Carbonated water with lime is shockingly effective
There is a handful of credible sources that vouch for Soda in distinctively curing a hangover. The nutshell version is that soda water with a squeeze of lime helps minimize the icky feeling of drinking by converting acetaldehyde to acetate-the less toxic by-product of alcohol. This is not a cue to get another drink, because at the end of it- abstinence is your best bet. Researchers in China conducted a study to test beverages as a hangover remedy, and they think Sprite may give you the fastest results; however, because of the astronomical high levels of sugar and other unnatural products, club soda is your best sought after fix.
- Watch what you put on your plate
If you ate too much and have a carb-hangover, fasting might seem like your ideal fix, but behold- it will only make things worse. Short term effects of fasting include slowing down of metabolism and forcing your body to store fat. Protein and fiber is your best bet, it balances your previous indulgences and will keep you full for long. Don’t be shy with adding superfoods as they assist your body in it’s natural detoxification process.
- Sweat more & then some
A high intensity workout followed by a sauna session does absolute wonders. It may be hard to push yourself at first but keep the reward in mind and let that drive you. If you have parties planned consecutively, a workout session will get you right back into the mood. So put your favorite jams on, and start sweating- You will not regret it.
A good night’s rest is imperative for recovery. It gets hard when your nights get long and you have to be at work the next morning, but if you have to stick it out for the whole month make sure you come back an hour early so you can get at least 6 hours of sleep. Pick your life’s battles and December parties wisely. Alcohol effects quality of sleep in a big way, and if you cant get restful shut eye, take that into consideration and leave the party earlier.
Over-eating and over-drinking will never really feel pleasant, especially if your body is sensitive towards alcohol and greasy food. The best way to not feel like a cat with 8 out of 9 lives left is to drink and eat moderately and responsibly as much as possible.
