Health benefits of spring onions

Spring onions are a very popular vegetable in Chinese cooking. But they also taste great and are high in nutrients and sulfur. Spring onions are also low in calories. Let’s take a closer look at some of the health benefits of scallions or spring onions.

Research shows that when used regularly they may help maintain a healthy heart as they can lower the oxidation of cholesterol and reduce one’s risk of contracting coronary heart disease. And since they are high in sulfur, they  may be able to reduce blood pressure levels.

Spring onions also contain chromium, which controls blood sugar levels and improves glucose tolerance, thereby helping to control diabetes.

Those who eat spring onions regularly  don’t get colds and flu often, as it contains anti-bacterial properties, which fights off colds and flu. Spring onions are also high in vitamin C, which fight off colds and flu and boosts the body’s immunity.

Some studies show that since spring onions contain the compound pectin, they may prevent and reduce one’s chances of developing colon cancer.  Regular consumption of spring onions can also protect the skin from wrinkling as they contain large amounts of the compound allicin. They also improve blood circulation  and protect the body from fungal infections.
