Seeds are more than Food for the Birds

Great things come in small packages. Seeds are packed with protein, fibre and beneficial fats that have many beneficial effects to the human body. Some of the seeds that can be consumed for their health benefits are sunflower seeds, flax seeds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds etc.

Flax seeds:

They are a rich source of dietary fibre, micronutrients and most importantly a good source of essential fatty acid (omega 3). The health benefits of flax seeds include

  • Cancer protection: The omega 3 fatty acid disrupt malignant cells and lignans have antiangiogenic properties which stop tumors from forming new blood vessels.
  • Lowering cholesterol: Cholesterol levels are lowered in people who consume flax seeds on a daily basis.
  • Improving blood sugar: Consuming flax seeds daily improves glycaemic control.

Sunflower seeds:

Sunflower seeds are a good source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Their health benefits include

  • Cardiovascular health: The antioxidants present prevents free radicals from oxidizing cholesterol.
  • Supports digestion: High content of dietary fibre in the raw seeds help in digesting food and cures constipation.
  • Anti-inflammatory properties: Reduces diseases caused by free radicals and inflammation like asthma and arthritis.

Chia seeds:

The ancient word for strength is Chia. Chia seeds today has been recognized as a super food. These seeds are loaded with dietary fibre, high quality protein and omega 3 fatty acids. They are known to improve blood cholesterol, reduce risk of diabetes and prevent cancer.

Thus, in order to experience the health benefits of seeds they should be included in the daily diet. They could be incorporated in different foods like porridge, ladoos, kheer etc or can be had in the raw form. It is important to keep in mind that cooking could cause loss of some nutrients hence best is to have them raw.
